The Shaolin Martial arts can trace its roots back to the arrival of Bodhidharma (Ta Mo) at the Shaolin Temple. There he taught monks meditation and began the history of the fighting monks. People have been studying this art for better health, as well as self defense, for over 2000 years. Many people are curious as to why a Chinese martial art would have Japanese style uniforms, a japanese style belt ranking system and the "Do" as part of the styles' name. The practice started years ago when Grandmaster Ie Chang Ming immigrated from China to Indonesia. In Indonesia, the Chinese are a minority and the object of resentment and discrimination. To avoid negative publicity, the style dropped the outward appearance of a Chinese style martial art. The name was called Shaolin-do and the Japanese belt ranking system was adopted. Other than these superficial changes, Grandmaster Ie taught in the traditional manner. Today the Shaolin Martial arts are passed on by Grandmaster Sin Kwang The'.
